Jackson Byck

Memories

Saturday morning we did a private family ceremony at the dog pond on Snowbasin mountain where we placed some of Jackson’s ashes and flowers. The time was 8:30 in the morning mp it was the same time that this happened (click to open the link). We were just leaving the house.

If that is not a sign from our son, what is?

When I think about Jackson I think about the taste of cookie dough. I think about scraped knees, summer air, ice cream, and sparklers. I think of Christmas, flannel PJs, and eating sweets that were meant for someone else.

I think of sharp words and sharper laughter. I think of tennis balls and the bold, sterile smell of them. I think of a smart boy. I think of the most compassionate person I know.

And, most recent, my fingers braiding his hair. Holding his hand. Forgetting how tall he is until he stands up.

Stood up.

He laid his head in my lap and I told him everything in the world, and when I held him he was a child with bleached hair and big brown eyes and scraped knees.

Dear Jackson, You were the brightest of all of us. I’ll see you again in the stars. Until then, keep shining. We all see you.

Jackson's song

You say I’m snarky and I know that
But not as snarky as my cat
You call me warrior, maybe it’s true
But I’m more a storier, through and through

Whatever you say
And whatever you do
Just don’t forget
My advice for you

Don’t get eaten by a bear
And go through life without a care
Vanilla extract doesn’t taste so good
Go smell the tires on your car
But tennis balls smell the best by far
You know you will be just fine
Just go have a good time,
And bring me back a slushie if you would

Some wonder about my humor
With all the pain and this fucking tumor
Just give me pickles and Bolognese
And I’ll be set for all my days

Yeah, whatever you say
And whatever you do
Just don’t forget
My advice for you

Don’t get eaten by a bear
Smoking cigarettes will get you nowhere
I hope you bought all the bitcoin that you could
Don’t go gambling all your money at once
And don’t get cancer, because it sucks
You know you will be just fine
Just go have a good time,
And bring me back a slushie if you would

Won’t you promise to think of me
Keep me safe in your memory
Feel me flowing in the breeze
And remember please

Don’t get eaten by a bear
Smoking cigarettes will get you nowhere
I hope you bought all the bitcoin that you could
Don’t go gambling all your money at once
And don’t get cancer, because it sucks
You know you’ll be just fine
Just go have a good time,
And bring me back a slushie if you would
